“Because I watched our son die,” he said flatly. “Two weeks ago. Leukemia. The treatment was denied by the same board that locked this core. Said his ‘biomass allocation’ wasn’t cost-effective.”
“Give me your key, Miles.”
Miles slumped against her, finally breaking. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” authorization code sft2841 120
“I faked my death to finish what we started, Ellie. Chimera was never a weapon. It was a filter. The board knew that. That’s why they buried it.” He smiled, and it was terrible. “120 seconds. The elevator to Floor -9 required retinal clearance. Hers worked—barely. The doors hissed open into a freezing corridor lined with warning stripes. At the far end, a single figure stood before the core’s glass housing: a tall man in a soaked coat, seawater dripping from his cuffs onto the sealed floor. The treatment was denied by the same board
No one was supposed to know the override. Not after the Purge. Not after the board had locked the core down and declared Project Chimera a planetary risk. But here it was, blinking on her terminal like a ghost signing its own name.

This is a great message for me to hear, for all of us to hear who are “doing art” and sometimes wonder if it will ever be good enough to share. There is the idea of doing art just for oneself, to use it as a therapeutic process, which is beneficial for sure, but your perspective gives me another motivation to actually share my work with someone(s). As always, Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement.
I just ordered your new book for myself. Merry Christmas to me!
Maybe I’m late to the party- but have you ever thought about or actually ever made autographed bookplates that we can purchase for our books? I would love to have your signature inside my copy. 😊
I loved this message. I have greatly enjoyed your essays and this one went straight to my heart. Thank you.
