No one believed him. They said Eli’s mind had softened with the altitude. But Avy believed him. Because the night he disappeared, someone had broken into her car and stolen only her notes on Eli’s story—leaving her laptop, her wallet, and a single, pristine white feather on the passenger seat.

Avy thought of her desk. Her unfinished columns. The white feather still tucked into her notebook.

She looked at Eli. “What happens if I stay?”

For a long moment, she stared at the orbs. Her whole life had been about finding stories, distilling them into columns of print, moving on to the next. But here, in the amber silence of the mountain, she understood that some stories weren’t meant to end. They were meant to be lived inside.

“Eli,” she breathed. “Everyone thinks you’re dead.”

Eli raised an eyebrow.

“I’m still filing a story,” Avy said, pulling out her notepad. “Not for the paper. For the mountain. Every memory deserves a witness.”

Avy spun. Eli Ponder stood at the center of the cavern, older, thinner, but very much alive. He wore the same ranger’s shirt he’d vanished in, now faded to the color of old parchment.
