Edrw To — Dwg Converter

Abstract: The EDRW file format, proprietary to Dassault Systèmes’ SolidWorks eDrawings application, is widely used for design collaboration due to its lightweight, securable, and viewable nature. However, its limitation lies in its lack of native editability. In contrast, the DWG format (Autodesk’s Drawing) is the industry standard for 2D and 3D CAD interoperability. This paper examines the technical challenges, conversion methodologies, fidelity outcomes, and optimal workflows for converting EDRW files to DWG format. It concludes that while direct conversion is constrained by format philosophy, a multi-path strategy involving intermediate export and re-engineering yields the highest practical utility. 1. Introduction The engineering design lifecycle demands both secure distribution (eDrawings) and collaborative editability (DWG). The EDRW format, derived from SolidWorks native files (SLDDRW), is intentionally stripped of parametric history and sometimes exact geometry to protect intellectual property. Converting EDRW to DWG is not a trivial file renaming but a translation of a published, locked view into an editable, open-standard drawing . This paper addresses whether high-fidelity conversion is possible, and under what conditions. 2. Format Architecture: Why EDRW is Not DWG | Feature | EDRW | DWG | |---------|------|-----| | Purpose | Viewing, markup, lightweight collaboration | Full editing, dimensioning, layering, plotting | | Geometry storage | Tessellated (mesh) or simplified BREP | Precise NURBS, vector, and solid model definitions | | Parametric data | None | Optional (dynamic blocks, constraints) | | Layer structure | Basic or flattened | Fully customizable, named layers | | Security | Built-in (expiration, disable measure) | None inherent |

An EDRW file may contain exact 2D vector data if exported from SolidWorks with “High Quality” settings. Otherwise, it contains only a lightweight mesh view. DWG expects exact vectors. The conversion’s success hinges entirely on how the EDRW was generated. 3. Conversion Methodologies Three primary methods exist, each with distinct trade-offs. edrw to dwg converter
