"It felt like a movie set," recalls Tom Willems, an urban explorer who snuck in during the early 2000s. "You’d walk down a corridor, and there were still bed frames bolted to the walls. In 2015, after a €4 million decontamination and restoration, Fort Napoleon finally opened to the public. But it is not a cheerful museum.
The psychiatric ward closed in 1958 after only seven years. Officially, it was due to "structural unsuitability." Unofficially, the rumor mill churns with darker reasons: a patient-on-staff assault, a suicide by drowning, and the simple, bureaucratic horror that no one wanted to pay to heat the place. For the next four decades, Fort Napoleon became a true terra nullius —no man's land. Vandals broke in. Teenagers dared each other to spend the night. Pigeons nested in the old latrines.
